Hello
My name is Gavin Montgomery. For as long as I can remember, I have had a passion for cars. I studied mechanical engineering at The Ohio State University with my sights set on working in the automotive industry. I joined our FSAE team, Formula Buckeyes, my sophomore year. My time with the team caused my automotive passion to grow exponentially. During that time, I bought my first camera with the goal of capturing higher quality images of my Jeep. As a result, I developed a new passion for photography that went hand-in-hand with my passion for cars. There is nothing more exciting to me than seeing an idea in my head materialize into something exciting that I can share with others.
More About Formula Buckeyes
Formula Buckeyes is a student project organization that designs and builds a small formula-style race car to compete against hundreds of other teams across the country and world. A majority of the car is manufactured in-house at our shop a few minutes outside of Ohio State's campus. I joined the team my sophomore year as an engine member. I quickly realized that my knowledge and skills were not as great as my interest. However, through countless hours spent at the shop and through valuable mentorship from upperclassmen, I developed my knowledge and skills over time. By my fourth year, I was promoted to Engine Lead, where I worked below our Powertrain Director. This position provided additional responsibility and learning opportunities. By my final year, I took over as Powertrain Director. This meant I was responsible for our engine as well as all of its peripheral systems - including a carbon fiber intake manifold, titanium exhaust, cooling system, and oil system. We competed at Michigan International Speedway in May of 2023 in a field of 120 cars. We took home third place overall, the teams best finish since 2001.
My time with the team provided an extraordinary opportunity to learn technical skills I had always dreamt of learning. However, more importantly, I developed long-lasting friendships with some of the most talented and hard-working individuals I have ever met. More so, I proved to myself that through good intentions and hard work, anything is possible. My photography journey is no different. When I picked up my camera for the first time, I hardly knew how to operate it, let alone make an interesting image. But, I have learned a lot already and am excited to continue learning.
